Core and periphery in networks

چکیده
We study a model of network formation where the bene ts from connections exhibit decreasing returns and decay with network distance. We show that the unique equilibrium network is a periphery-sponsored star, where one player, the center, maintains no links and earns a high payo¤, while all other players maintain a single link to the center and earn lower payo¤s. Both the star architecture and payo¤ inequality are preserved in an extension of the model where agents can make transfers and bargain over the formation of links, under the condition that the surplus of connections increases in the size of agentsneighborhoods. Our model thus generates two common features of social and economic networks: (1) a core-periphery structure; (2) positive correlation between network centrality and payo¤s. The Application of Complex Networks Analysis to Assess Iran's Trade and It's Most Important Trading Partners in Asia
The existing trade models suggest that for tradable goods potential partners can be many, but eventually only one (the one offering the best price) should be selected, therefore relatively few (unidirectional) trade links will appear between countries. If the structure of international trade flows describes as a network, trade link would give rise between countries. This paper exploit recently-...
متن کاملAn Investigation of World-System Theory and Globalization in the Rama Novels by Arthur C. Clarke and Gentry Lee
Noam Chomsky argues that only a meager percentage of the world, consisting of mainly large corporations and developed nations, prosper from globalization. As stated in Immanuel Wallerstein’s World-System Theory, the modern system of the world, which is constructed according to the economic status of nations, can be divided into three levels: the core, the semi-periphery, and the periphery. Whil...
متن کاملMulticore-periphery structure in networks
Many real-world networked systems exhibit a multicore-periphery structure, i.e., multiple cores, each of which contains densely connected elements, surrounded by sparsely connected elements that define the periphery. Identification of the multiple-periphery structure can provide a new handle on structures and functions of various complex networks, such as cognitive and biological networks, food...
متن کاملA Unified Method of Detecting Core-Periphery Structure and Community Structure in Networks
The core-periphery structure and the community structure are two typical meso-scale structures in complex networks. Although community detection has been extensively investigated from different perspectives, the definition and the detection of the core-periphery structure have not received much attention. Furthermore, the detection problems of the core-periphery and community structure were sep...

Sadamori Kojaku and Naoki Masuda∗ Department of Engineering Mathematics, Merchant Venturers Building, University of Bristol, Woodland Road, Clifton, Bristol BS8 1UB, United Kingdom Abstract A network with core-periphery structure consists of core nodes that are densely interconnected. In contrast to community structure, which is a different meso-scale structure of networks, core nodes can be co...
متن کاملFinding multiple core-periphery pairs in networks
With a core-periphery structure of networks, core nodes are densely interconnected, peripheral nodes are connected to core nodes to different extents, and peripheral nodes are sparsely interconnected. Core-periphery structure composed of a single core and periphery has been identified for various networks. However, analogous to the observation that many empirical networks are composed of densel...
